Frequently Asked Questions

The Academy hosts resources for shared mobility operators of all sizes, including ones new to the industry. Need to know about financing, insurance, regulatory requirements, vehicle hardware and software and fleet management strategies? We've got you covered.

Shared micromobility uses a combination of cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity to power vehicles on/off, provide real-time location tracking and remotely unlock the smart lock and battery compartment (if applicable). For this to be possible, each vehicle must have an IoT (Internet of Things) device and a SIM card.

Anything where people, products and food need to be moved, micromobility can integrate. Think scooter rentals at hotels, e-bike for food orders, cargo bikes for last-mile deliveries, golf-carts at resorts… The only limit is your creativity.

To start a public e-scooter sharing service, you will need a fleet of e-scooters that are specifically designed for sharing. These e-scooters should be durable, reliable, and easy to maintain. Each vehicle will need an IoT device and a SIM card to connect it to the fleet management system and enable riders to rent the devices.

Most public sharing contracts will require a minimum for General Liability Insurance. This insurance provides coverage for third-party bodily injury and property damage claims that may arise from accidents involving your e-scooters.

Startup time depends on the scale of the venture, the availability of resources, and the regulatory environment in your city or region. Generally, it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 months to launch an e-scooter sharing service. This time frame includes market research, developing a business plan, securing funding, acquiring necessary permits and licenses, purchasing or leasing the e-scooters, developing the software platform, and launching the service.

The cost of starting a vehicle sharing service can vary depending on several factors, such as the cost of purchasing or leasing the vehicles, the cost of app developing (or software licensing fees), marketing expenses, staffing and insurance costs. A rough estimate for starting an e-scooter sharing service with 100 vehicles could range from $100,000 to $250,000. Fewer vehicles will mean lower startups costs, but less revenue potential.

The Joyride platform provides a comprehensive solution for vehicle sharing; including a rider app, staff operator app, and a backend dashboard for fleet management. It's customizable to meet the unique needs of your business and can be branded to reflect your company's identity.

Sourcing vehicles has become an industry pain point. The Joyride Garage is your B2B marketplace for electric scooters, bikes, mopeds, batteries and parts. Our OEM partnerships ensure you get the best price on new and used vehicles.

Our platform is hardware agnostic! We support a wide range of micromobility vehicles, including e-bikes and e-scooters, and continue to integrate new types of vehicles as they emerge.
